Why low strings can read the wrong octave
Pitch detection gets harder the lower the note, because the fundamental frequency sits close to its own overtones. On a low B or E string, a detector can briefly lock onto the octave harmonic instead of the true fundamental, showing a note that's technically correct but an octave off from what you'd expect. If a reading looks odd, mute the string, replay it cleanly, and give the tuner a full second of sustain before trusting the display.
