How to tune a tenor saxophone online

Tap the microphone button and allow browser access — nothing is recorded or uploaded. Play a note with your normal embouchure and hold it steady. CleanTune analyzes any pitch chromatically — use the reference tones below to check against a common concert pitch.

Why tenor needs a different mouthpiece pull than alto

Tenor saxophone uses a larger mouthpiece and reed than alto, and its longer neck means the same numerical pull-out distance changes pitch less than it would on a smaller horn — so tenor players often need to pull the mouthpiece out slightly further than the "default" position alto players use to land in tune at standard pitch. If you switch between the two horns, don't assume the same mouthpiece position works on both; retune from scratch on each.

Adjust your mouthpiece position

Push the mouthpiece further onto the neck cork to sharpen your pitch, pull it out slightly to flatten it.

Tune with a full, supported sound

Weak air support tends to play flat — use your normal playing volume and embouchure when checking pitch.

Give low notes time to settle

Tenor's lower range needs a moment to stabilize — hold the note steady for a full second before reading the tuner.

Frequently asked questions

What note do you tune a tenor saxophone to?

Most concert bands tune to a concert Bb.

Why does my tenor sax sound flat in the low register?

Low notes on tenor need strong air support to sit in tune — weak support tends to pull pitch flat.

Can I use this tuner without playing into the microphone?

No — CleanTune listens to real sound through your device's microphone, so you need to play the saxophone normally for it to detect pitch.

Does the same mouthpiece position work on both alto and tenor?

No — tenor's larger mouthpiece and longer neck mean pitch responds differently to the same pull-out distance. Retune the mouthpiece position separately on each horn rather than copying a setting between them.
