How to tune a ukulele online

Tap the microphone button and allow browser access — nothing is recorded or uploaded. Pluck one string at a time and let it ring. Watch the note name and needle: green and centered means that string is perfectly in tune.

Standard ukulele tuning (GCEA)

Most soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use standard G C E A tuning with a high G string. CleanTune also supports low G tuning, which drops the G string an octave for a fuller, guitar-like range, and baritone tuning (D G B E). Switch between them with the tuning selector above.

Why cheap ukuleles slip out of tune

Many entry-level ukuleles use friction pegs — simple wooden pegs held in place by friction alone, similar to a violin — rather than geared tuners. Friction pegs can slip under string tension, especially in humid weather when the wood swells and contracts. If your ukulele won't hold a pitch for more than a few minutes even after new strings have settled, the pegs themselves, not your tuning technique, are usually the problem, and pushing gently in while turning (or a dab of peg compound) often helps.

Watch your G string

The high G is the string most beginners tune incorrectly an octave too low — check it against the reference tone.

New strings stretch

Fresh nylon or fluorocarbon strings drift out of tune quickly — expect to retune several times when they're new.

Tune one string at a time

Mute the other strings gently with your palm so the detector locks onto a single, clean pitch.

Frequently asked questions

What is standard ukulele tuning?

Standard ukulele tuning is G C E A, usually with a high G string on soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles.

What's the difference between high G and low G tuning?

High G tuning uses a G string pitched above the C string, giving the classic bright ukulele sound. Low G tuning drops that string an octave for a deeper range closer to a guitar.

How is a baritone ukulele tuned?

Baritone ukuleles are tuned D G B E, the same as the top four strings of a guitar.

Why won't my ukulele hold its tuning?

New strings stretching is the most common cause in the first few days. After that, it's usually friction pegs slipping rather than a tuning mistake — push in gently while turning, or consider geared tuners.
