How to tune an alto saxophone online
Tap the microphone button and allow browser access — nothing is recorded or uploaded. Play a note with your normal embouchure and hold it steady. CleanTune analyzes any pitch chromatically — use the reference tones below to check against a common concert pitch.
Why a cold saxophone plays flat
Saxophones, like most wind instruments, play flatter when cold because sound travels slightly slower through cooler air, lengthening the effective size of the air column. Play a few long tones to warm the instrument up before trusting a tuning reading taken cold. Mouthpiece position on the neck cork is the main adjustment for overall pitch, while individual note tendencies are corrected with embouchure and voicing rather than moving the mouthpiece again.
Adjust your mouthpiece position
Push the mouthpiece further onto the neck cork to sharpen your pitch, pull it out slightly to flatten it.
Tune with a full, supported sound
Weak air support tends to play flat — use your normal playing volume and embouchure when checking pitch.
Check your reed
A worn or overly soft reed can pull your pitch flat regardless of mouthpiece position — make sure your reed is in good condition before tuning.
Frequently asked questions
What note do you tune an alto saxophone to?
Most concert bands tune to a concert Bb.
Why does my saxophone play sharp in the upper register?
This is a common tendency on saxophone — voicing and embouchure control usually fix it more effectively than moving the mouthpiece further.
Can I use this tuner without playing into the microphone?
No — CleanTune listens to real sound through your device's microphone, so you need to play the saxophone normally for it to detect pitch.
Why is my saxophone flat right after I take it out of the case?
Cold air lowers pitch on any wind instrument. Play a few long tones to bring the horn up to temperature before checking tuning seriously.
