How to tune a guitar online

- If the needle sits left of center and the display glows orange, the string is flat — tighten the tuning peg slightly.
- If the needle sits right of center and glows red, the string is sharp — loosen the peg slightly.
- When the note turns green and the needle centers, that string is in tune.

Why intonation matters as much as tuning
Getting each open string to read perfectly in tune doesn't guarantee every fretted note will sound right — that's a separate issue called intonation, controlled by the string length relative to the fret spacing and, on electric guitars, the saddle position at the bridge. If open strings tune true but chords higher up the neck sound off, the culprit is usually intonation rather than the tuning itself, and it typically needs a small saddle adjustment rather than retuning. Fresh strings also stretch for the first few days of play, so expect to retune more often right after a string change.
